Canada is a member of the NATO alliance and aids in the defense of the North American continent as well as that of Germany (though the Germany-based squadrons are due to return to Canada in 1994). With 23,000 personnel and some 210 combat aircraft, the Air Command of the Canadian Armed Forces is undergoing a major upgrade program in which aging CF-5 and CF-104 aircraft are being replaced by the CF-18.
